Catalysing Job and New-Business Models in Semi-Rural Areas Through Solar PV Training

Timeline: 2025-2027
Budget: EUR 60.000

Why?

Lack of urgency and tangible solutions

  • 23 million young people in Africa are currently unemployed, with projections for 2030 indicating an increase to 27 million. Additionally, 40% of those employed are experiencing working poverty, earning between US$ 2.15 and US$ 3.65 per day.
  • There is high unemployment rate among the youth, particularly young women, who have been historically marginalized from the workforce.

Objective

Untapped renewable energy potential

  • East Africa boasts considerable untapped potential in solar, wind, and geothermal energy sources. Finite energy sources are often imported, requiring foreign currency payments, making local renewable energy solutions more critical in the economy. Ensuring the population is equipped with the necessary skills play a vital role in the catalysing job and new-business models in semi-rural areas through Solar PV training.

What?

Catalyse multi-level employment and business opportunities in RE

  • Provide 800 youth (including 400 women) with opportunities in renewable energy.
  • Enhance the reach of companies that offer products and services alongside the value chain to more potential geographies while offering these opportunities to graduates.

Virtual platforms for connecting in multiple levels for RE

  • Connect youths with temporal and multi-level job opportunities, private sector partners, trainings, e-commerce, and affiliate partners in renewable energy.

How?

Identify talent and address obstacles in semirural areas

  • Identify young students, particularly in semi-rural areas with low connectivity, and bridging their obstacles to technical education.

Develop hybrid systems for approaching more people

  • Create a virtual platform that operates both digitally and through information systems that can reach remote areas without needing internet, using unstructured supplementary service data (USSD) – the same technology used for mobile payments in east Africa.

Make financial instruments for micro-entrepreneurship accessible for everyone

  • Support: Provide lease and microfinance options for tools, equipment, and components needed to implement last-mile business models in renewable energy.
